Morocco on the map of Africa
Morocco occupies the north-western corner of Africa, the region known as the Maghreb, which it shares with Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania. It borders Algeria to the east; the land border has been closed since 1994. To the south lies Western Sahara, a disputed territory largely administered by Morocco, beyond which is Mauritania.
Morocco and Europe
At the Strait of Gibraltar, Morocco is only about 14 km from Spain, and on clear days you can see one coast from the other. Two Spanish cities, Ceuta and Melilla, lie on the Moroccan coast. Ferries cross from Tarifa and Algeciras in about an hour; see the map of Spain and Morocco. Portugal is a short flight away, and Morocco's time zone is close to Western Europe's.
Morocco on the world map
Morocco lies roughly between latitudes 21°N and 36°N, at about the same latitude as the south of Spain, Cyprus and the southern United States. The Atlas Mountains divide the fertile Atlantic plains, where most cities lie, from the Sahara in the south-east. See the map of Morocco with cities.
