What to see
The medina was laid out in the 18th century on a European plan, so its streets are straighter and calmer than in Marrakech. Walk the Skala de la Ville ramparts for ocean views, then visit the fishing port, where the catch of the day is grilled at stalls by the harbour.
The wide beach south of the medina is windy for much of the year, which makes Essaouira one of Morocco's best spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing. The Gnaoua World Music Festival takes place here each summer.
Getting there
There is no railway. Supratours and CTM buses take about three hours from Marrakech, and many visitors come on a day trip, although staying overnight lets you enjoy the town after the tour buses leave.
